Ward 172

Case Slide No.:

Type:
MARROW CRUSH
Description:
Here we see single, double and triple inclusions in three of the central cluster of myeloma cells. In this author’s opinion, these are all Dutcher bodies.
Comment:
The notion that a Dutcher body represents a cytoplasmic invagination of the nucleus appearing to develop from accumulation of material in the perinuclear cisterna, has been elegantly demonstrated by TEM. (Intranuclear inclusions in plasma cells and lymphocytes from patients with monoclonal gammopathies. Brunning R D and Parkin. Am J Clin Pathol. 66:10-21,1976)
More recently, it has been suggested that Dutcher , Russell and even Mott-cell inclusions (later) “are all aspects of the same phenomenon” representing spherical cytoplasmic inclusions that 1) are clearly within cytoplasm, 2) at least partially overlie the nucleus or 3) invaginate the nucleus. (Dutcher bodies. Bain, BJ. Am J Hematol. 2009. 84:589) For a brief discussion of Russell bodies, see preceding Pleomorphic Myeloma Case 2.
